Have an Open Heart in your Jewelry Design Business

  • It is my belief that the creative success of a jewelry design business, or any artists, design professionals, or craftspeople for that matter, lies in how open their hearts are.

Our livelihood is dependant on the translation of the intangible: emotions, colors, music, dreams, messages from aliens…into the physical: paintings, weavings, pottery, necklaces, and so on. The way we approach our design work is largely determined by the quality of life experiences that we've had.

To me, having an open heart is about the ability to listen, experience, and learn about the world around you. From time to time it is a good idea to take a break from your jewelry design business and look at other types of art and craft. Visit museums, stores, go to a concert, check out a local student design exhibit, or watch a ballet. You can use these different experiences to stimulate your creativity and help you approach your work in different ways.

    Eat Something Strange

Experiment and try something different from what you are used to.

For instance, if you’ve never had Indian food, find yourself a proper Indian restaurant and try a few dishes with your friends.

“After you try Indian food, you will probably not look at Indian art, design, textiles, or their insane use of color the same. Ever again."

Experiencing a bit of a new culture brings new knowledge, design sense, and ideas as to how you perceive and view situations.

Experiencing the spices in Indian food and the mix of textures, smells, and tastes will inform you a bit about the culture in India.  And that understanding will give way to a broader understanding of how emotional responses relate to random thoughts, ideas, design, and images.

So go out and explore, try things, listen, and enjoy the world around you. It will not only improve the quality of your life, but the quality of your work as well.~Oran

  • Try it for 30 Days

Google engineer Matt Cutts talks about the benefits of trying things, for 30 days.

It's a really neat, non committal way of trying things!

"I guarantee you, the next 30 days are going to pass, whether you like it or not!"   ~Matt Cutts
